December 2019 | Senior Updates

Admission Decisions
  • Many students have received decisions from early/rolling/priority applications.  They should update their Naviance Student account with those results.  In almost all cases, we will not know admission decisions unless Naviance Student is updated.  Very few colleges send admission decisions to counselors.
  • If the student was admitted Early Decision, they should submit a deposit to that school and withdraw any applications submitted to other institutions. Financial aid applicants should wait until they have received their financial aid statement.  The student should contact their counselor if the financial aid offer is unrealistic.
  • Students who were admitted Early Action, Rolling, or Priority Admissions, may still pursue applications to other colleges.
  • Students deferred to Regular Decision should meet with their counselor after the break.  The counselor will walk through the next steps at any school which has deferred an application.
  • If admission was denied, the student should take some time to reflect, but also quickly move on to the rest of the college search.  The student should reevaluate his/her college list and contact his/her counselor immediately if any adjustments need to be made.
College Counselor Availability
  • Mr. Brunk and Mrs. Coughlin will be on campus throughout the duration of exams. We encourage seniors to come by before or after exams to ask last minute questions or work on Regular Decision applications before the break begins.
  • Counselors will not be in the office during the break.  They understand that there may be time sensitive matters, however, and will be checking email.  Pressing issues will be addressed as they arise, and other matters will be handled when Severn reopens in January.
Early January Deadlines
  • If a student has a school with an early January deadline to which s/he would like to submit an application and s/he hasn't yet informed his/her counselor, please do so ASAP. Waiting until a few days before the early January deadlines may result in the office not being able to send your school documents by the application deadline.  However, most colleges hold only the student to the published application deadlines, and will accept documents from the high school well after those dates. Students should still submit applications by the deadline even if documents can’t be sent until after the break.
Test Scores
  • Test scores should have been sent to all of the colleges which need them.  Now is the time to send them if they have not already been sent. Students should log in to their College Board or ACT accounts to confirm that scores have been sent. College counselors cannot send test scores on behalf of students.
Naviance Student College List Updates
  • Students should remove colleges to which they are not applying. If there is any difficulty doing this,  students should email your college counselor to manually remove them on our end.
  • In Naviance Student, students should indicate which applications they have submitted.
  • If a student wishes to add additional colleges for Regular Decision, they should do so as soon as possible AND discuss the additions with their college counselor in person.
We are proud of the effort the seniors have put into their college search this fall and we wish everyone a relaxing holiday season to recharge for the spring semester and the final steps in the college search.
