Spring Sports Season is Underway for Middle School Athletes

When lacrosse sticks, tennis rackets and baseball bats start taking up space in the Middle School locker areas it can only mean one thing - spring sports have arrived!
As part of Severn’s robust Middle School Athletics program, seventh- and eighth graders can choose from a wide variety of sports this season, including baseball, tennis, lacrosse, and track & field.

Athletics are an exciting and highly anticipated part of the Middle School experience in seventh and eighth grade. After getting introduced to a variety of sports in the sixth grade, students have the opportunity to level up to team competition in the fall, winter, and spring. Because of the high level of participation, many students end up trying new sports.

“These athletes are super energetic,” said Assistant Athletic Director Erin De Falco. “We are developing them to be competitive, but the expectation is to gain love for a sport.”

Many students continue to play club sports in addition to participating in Severn’s athletics program. For the more serious athletes, the opportunity to play for Severn is a chance to step away from the intensity of travel teams and find joy in playing with their friends and working on their own skill development. With no conference championships and a slate of games against teams of comparable skill levels, student athletes find out what they can really do on the field.

“This is my first year at Severn. I’m looking forward to playing lacrosse with my friends and getting some wins,” said Finn Fowler ‘29. “I’ve been playing since kindergarten, and this year I get to play attack. I want to play in Upper School, and if I get the chance, to play in college.”

Trying new things is central to the ethos of the PE program. Student athletes are heavily encouraged to try new sports and skills free from the fear of failure. To De Falco, a sporting environment that isn’t scary or intimidating gives players the freedom to take chances.

“Our MS programs are competitive but less demanding,” said De Falco. “We tell kids, “Now is the time to try! You won’t learn how to shoot with your left hand if you never try.”

For the athletes who stick with sports they already know and love, the opportunity to teach and lead is hard to pass up.

“I’ve been playing lacrosse since I was seven, and this is my second year on the Severn team,” said Marin Batchelder ‘29. “I’m looking forward to experiencing sports with Severn again, and now as an eighth grader I’m excited to be a leader on the team.”

As Severn’s MS athletes take to the fields and courts this spring, they will do so in a supportive and encouraging environment that with undoubtedly help them grow as players, as individuals, and as teammates.
