Open Doors Introduces Study of Traditions for Second Trimester

Lower School students are exploring the topic of traditions as the second trimester Open Doors program gets underway.
The programming for this unit centers around holidays and the various holiday-themed traditions that are celebrated throughout the world.  Paired with books that offer engaging stories and vibrant illustrations, the lessons on traditions help to deepen students’ awareness and understanding of different cultures.

Open Doors is one of many character-focused initiatives within the Lower School curriculum. The program helps young students understand how to learn about each other and themselves. Each trimester, the program director, Taylor Belo ’17, selects a new theme centered around understanding and self-growth and develops lessons tailored to each age group. Each lesson is paired with an age-appropriate book that helps to bring the topic into focus.

Preschool and Prekindergarten: A Festive Global Adventure
Preschool and Prekindergarten students are enjoying Jingle Bells by Iza Trapani, an expansion of the classic holiday song. This book takes young readers on a trip across the globe, introducing them to winter celebrations in different countries. From Mexico’s piñatas to Sweden’s St. Lucia processions, the story pairs lively new verses with colorful illustrations, highlighting customs, foods, and festivities that make each culture unique. The familiar tune provides an easy entry point for little learners to discover the joy of traditions beyond their own.

Kindergarten to Fifth Grade: Celebrating Cultural Diversity
Older students are diving into Let’s Celebrate! Special Days Around the World by Kate DePalma. This book introduces readers to children from diverse backgrounds as they celebrate holidays such as Diwali, Día de Muertos, Hanukkah, and Lunar New Year. Through detailed descriptions and vivid imagery, students are learning about the foods, rituals, and customs that make these celebrations special. The book also includes cultural insights, giving students the opportunity to understand and reflect on the deeper meanings behind each holiday as they explore the topic.

Fostering Connection Through Tradition
Learning about global traditions allows students to reflect on shared human values while celebrating a wide range of cultural expression. Open Doors programming encourages engaging discussions and activities, which allows students to make meaningful connections between the traditions they celebrate, and the ones celebrated around the world.
