Admirals Achieving Big Things in the 2023-24 Winter Sports Season

Varsity Wrestling locked up the MIAA B-Conference Championship over the weekend, earning both the team title for having the best record in the conference and the tournament title. Just days before, the Varsity Boys’ Swim Team landed atop the podium as the MIAA B-Conference Champions, the perfect finish to the team’s undefeated season. And the Varsity Girls Swim Team snagged the #2 spot in the conference at the IAAM B-Conference Championships in early February after posting a strong 5-3 season overall.

Varsity Wrestling now heads to the state championship meet, which will be held this weekend at Harford Community College.

In another winter success story, the Boys' Varsity Basketball team finishes out the regular season schedule this week, having already earned the #1 seed in the upcoming MIAA B-Conference Championship Tournament, which begins next week. The Admirals are currently 19-5 overall, with the last loss dating back to late December at the Mid-Atlantic Basketball Classic.

The Severn Girls’ Varsity Basketball team also had a solid regular season performance, finishing 15-7 overall, and are now playoff-bound. The Admirals compete in the IAAM Quarterfinals on February 13 in a road matchup against Notre Dame Prep.

Throughout the season, a number of Admirals had standout performances that earned them individual honors, records, and accolades.  

Swimmer Aliza Monaldo ’24 set a new school record in the 200m freestyle at the Championship Meet, completing it in 1:55:16 to beat the previous record of 1:56:68, which dated back to 1992. Monaldo was also named IAAM Athlete of the Week in January.

Swimmer Kenzie Getz ’25 also set a new school record in the 100m freestyle at the IAAM Championships, finishing in 54.16. She shaved nearly two-tenths of a second off the previous record of 54.34, which had stood since 2000.

On their way to victory, four Severn wrestlers finished in the top five at the Championship Meet. Finishing in fourth were Aidan Shenck ‘24, Dom Montgomery ‘27, and Talin Krashoc '26. Nicholas Melfi ‘25 earned a fifth-place finish, defeating an A-Conference competitor in an individual win that ultimately helped the Admirals hold off St. Paul’s for the conference crown.

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball squad is led by Senior and Captain Kingston Price ’24, who surpassed his 1000^th career point back in mid-January, becoming one of only seven Admirals to hit this milestone. In last week's matchup against rival St. Mary's, Price recorded yet another career-high points total, coming away with 40 points in the team’s 87-50 conference victory.
