Planned gifts can provide long-lasting support for our organization while enjoying financial benefits for yourself.

Planned gifts at Severn School play a crucial role in ensuring the school’s long-term success and sustainability. All planned gifts, regardless of size, help secure a brighter future for the Severn School community. These contributions are directed towards the school’s general endowment fund. Donors can further align a planned gift by designating it towards a specific area of Severn’s endowed funds, such as: Financial Aid, Faculty Professional Development, Student Programs, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Let your “why” create a legacy and a testament to all that Severn School has given you and be part of all that Severn will be in the future!

BENEFICIARY ASSIGNMENT

Assignments are added by the donor through the institution holding the account. Examples of accounts with this option are: Banking accounts, Retirement accounts, Health Savings accounts (HSAs), Brokerage accounts, Life Insurance, and Charitable Remainder Trust.
BEQUESTS

A bequest is the act of giving assets through the provisions of a Will, Trust, or an Estate plan. Your attorney can help you include a bequest to Severn School in your estate plan. We can provide some basic sample bequest language to assist you and your attorney.
PERSONAL PROPERTY/REAL ESTATE GIFTS

The donor benefit can come in the form of an income tax deduction equal to the appraised fair market value of the property. A donor can use appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, vehicles, or jewelry.
PLANNED ASSET GIFTS

These gifts provide cash to Severn School right away and would be allocated toward our Admiral Fund. Examples of this type of gift are:
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from an IRA, Donor Advised Fund (DAF), and Stock Gifts.

Betsy Bannat

A Legacy of Giving: Betsy C. Bannat’s Commitment to Severn School

When Betsy C. Bannat first toured Severn School in the 1980s, she was determined to provide the best possible education for her three daughters. She believed Severn would help them reach their full potential, a decision that proved well-founded, as all three went on to pursue successful careers in STEM fields. Recently, we had the privilege of speaking with Betsy about her philanthropic philosophy and the deep connection between her giving and her experience as an Alumni Parent.

Betsy’s approach to philanthropy is rooted in active engagement and community leadership. As a former trustee, she played a pivotal role in shaping Severn School’s financial sustainability. In the early 1990s, she helped establish and formalize the school’s planned gift acceptance program, creating best practices and policies that continue to uphold Severn’s mission and long-term financial health. Her contributions ensure that Severn remains a thriving institution well beyond her daughters’ time as students.

Personally, Betsy has chosen to support Severn School through charitable contributions via her IRA. By leveraging the tax benefits and flexibility of this approach, she maximizes the impact of her generosity. She describes the process as straightforward requiring only a simple form and signature with her financial institution to designate Severn School as a percentage beneficiary of her IRA.

Betsy’s vision and dedication have left an indelible mark on Severn School. Her philanthropic leadership not only strengthens the institution today but also paves the way for future generations of students to excel and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
