The Water Street Players Proudly Present Urinetown: The Musical

A world of wretched whys and water woes, Urinetown trickles onto the stage with a satirical splash!
A world of wretched whys and water woes, Urinetown trickles onto the stage with a satirical splash! In this delightfully dystopian musical, corporate greed collides with civil rebellion in a city where every flush is a financial fiasco. Packed with punchy performances and plenty of puns, this riotous romp is anything but a dry affair.

Urinetown follows the citizens of a dystopian desert of a town after a twenty-year drought. Private toilets have been made illegal, and public toilets are only accessible through a daily fee to the owner. As Penelope (played by Annie Campion ‘26) says, “it is a privilege to pee!”

In Urinetown, composers Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis use comedy and laughter to make some very serious points about capitalism, corporate greed, personal responsibility, and the very nature of freedom within a society. The production uses elements of parody to poke fun not only at the characters, but at itself and at the genre of musical theatre. All these things have made Urinetown an incredibly rewarding and equally fun experience for the actors and technicians in the show. Over 30 Severn students and staff have been involved in making this winter musical come to life on stage.

“The Water Street Players have worked very, very hard to bring the story of Bobby and Hope to life,” says Theatre Director Dr. Elizabeth Patterson. “Their talents and dedication to the show have been both humbling and inspiring to see.”

Urinetown runs from Thursday, February 20 – Saturday, February 22 with one show daily in Price Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available here.
