Highley Thompson Announces Departure

Upper School Head R. Highley Thompson '88 announced his eventual departure from Severn School effective June 30, 2009. Mr. Thompson cited personal growth and opportunity while talking with faculty and staff. "Please know how honored I have been to be able to return to my old school twice to work with such a fine group of educators and students. This is my 16th year here as a teacher and administrator, and it just feels like the right time to move on to another school and to a new adventure,” said Thompson.

Mr. Thompson graduated from Severn School in 1988, a Cum Laude Society member and G.P. Lindsay Memorial Award winner. He went on to earn his bachelors degree in English from Princeton University, where he played varsity lacrosse all four years, winning the National Championship in 1992. He returned to Severn in 1992 to teach math and Latin in the Middle School. Two years later he again departed Severn to attend
graduate school at the University of Virginia, earning his masters in educational leadership in 1995. Returning to Severn yet again, Mr. Thompson taught math, English, and history in the Upper School, eventually rising to Dean of Students, Academic Dean, and then to Upper School Head in 2004.

"I’m excited for Highley, yet disappointed for Severn," said Headmaster Lagarde, "He has filled so many roles here and done so with skill and grace. It will be very difficult to find a successor to fill his shoes. “At this point, I don't know where I'll land next year, but I am hopeful that I'll be able to find a school where I can learn as much as I have learned at Severn. It's time to leave the nest and learn to fly," said Thompson. “Severn has always been, and will remain, a source of great pride for me, and I will never forget all of your support and guidance through these years. I will finish out the year on June 30, 2009 -- in the meantime, I will continue to work as hard as I can to make Severn an even better place for students and teachers alike.”

Headmaster Lagarde is convening a search committee to begin the arduous task of replacing Highley Thompson. The hope is to name a replacement by March. Meanwhile, please join all of us here st Severn in wishing Highley, his wife Anne, and their two children, Garner and Virginia, all the very best.
